A Vine for My Glasses 🌿

Sometimes a new Woven Witch piece begins with a carefully thought-out plan.

And sometimes I get a new pair of glasses and think, I could crochet something for those.

This was very much the second kind.

My new close-up glasses needed a chain, but I didn't want to make an ordinary glasses chain. If I was going to wear something hanging from my frames, I wanted it to feel like jewellery — something decorative, a little unusual, and unmistakably Woven Witch.

So I started experimenting with some of my sparkly jewellery yarn and a tiny 2mm crochet hook.

The idea gradually became a little enchanted vine.

I crocheted the main vine in shimmering emerald green, working back along the chain to give it more texture and adding tiny leaves and branches as I went. I didn't want it to look too neat or perfectly symmetrical. Real vines don't grow according to a ruler, and I wanted this one to feel as though it had simply wandered wherever it fancied.

Then came the flowers.

I made tiny crocheted flowers in lilac, pink and silver, intending to make plenty so that I could experiment with their placement afterwards. I ended up making twenty-four of them before discovering that the finished prototype only wanted ten!

Apparently even enchanted gardens require editing.

The flowers were individually attached along the vine, with some sitting alone and others growing together in little clusters. I had originally planned to add seed beads as well, but once I tried the finished chain on, I changed my mind.

It didn't need them.

The metallic yarn already catches the light beautifully, and there was something I loved about being able to see the green vine twisting between the flowers and leaves. Adding anything else felt like decorating something that had already told me it was finished.

And so, the first Woven Witch botanical glasses chain is complete.

This one is mine — the prototype that allowed me to work out the construction, proportions, flower placement and all the tiny details that you can't really decide until you make something for the first time and actually wear it.

But it won't be the only one.

I'm going to be making hand-crocheted botanical eyewear jewellery for the Woven Witch shop, using this first vine as the starting point. Each one will be made by hand, so I don't expect any two vines to grow in quite the same way. Flowers may wander into different places, leaves will turn in different directions, and each piece will have its own little personality.

Because apparently Woven Witch now has a tiny enchanted eyewear garden too.

And it all happened because I bought a pair of pink glasses.
