Foxglove Is Finished: The First Cardigan of the WildWood Collection

There is something rather special about fastening off the final stitch of a project that has been part of your life for weeks.

Foxglove is finally finished.

Foxglove is the first completed cardigan from my WildWood Collection, a collection inspired by woodland colour, wildflowers and the shifting shades of the natural world. Her yarn moves through beautiful tones of orange, pink, peach, yellow and russet, creating a cardigan that seems to change colour as you look across it.

One of the things I love most about working with yarn like this is that I can guide the shape of the garment, but I can't completely control where every colour will fall. The yarn has a little freedom of its own. Each section develops differently, and by the time all the pieces are brought together, the cardigan has become completely individual.

A Longer Journey Than Expected

Foxglove certainly made me work for her.

The body came together first, followed by the sleeves, and for a while it looked as though I was approaching the finish line. But when I looked carefully at one of the completed sleeves, I wasn't happy with the way the cuff was sitting.

I could have left it.

It would probably have been easy to tell myself that handmade work isn't supposed to be perfect and move on.

But there is a difference between the little variations that give handmade work its character and something that I know I can make better.

So I made the decision to replace the sleeve.

That meant crocheting another 37 rows from the beginning.

It wasn't particularly exciting to realise that a supposedly finished sleeve needed to be made all over again, but the replacement turned out exactly as I wanted it to. Looking at the finished cardigan now, I'm very glad I did it.

The Final Stitches

Once the replacement sleeve was complete, Foxglove could finally be assembled. The pieces were joined and the finishing trim worked around the cardigan, transforming a collection of crocheted panels into the garment I had been imagining.

Then came one final detail: sewing in the Woven Witch label.

That little label means more to me than its size might suggest. It marks Foxglove as part of something I've been slowly building, one project at a time.

And with that, she was finished.

The First of the WildWood Five

Foxglove is also an important milestone because she is the first finished cardigan in the WildWood Collection.

She will eventually be joined by Dryad, Bluebell, Heatherbell and Luna Bloom, each with its own colours and personality.

For now, though, Foxglove gets the woodland to herself.

She has been photographed, labelled and added to the Woven Witch shop, where she is available as a single handmade piece in UK size 10–12 / Medium.

There won't be another Foxglove exactly like this one. Even if I worked the same pattern again, the changing colours of the yarn would create something different.

That's one of the things I find so appealing about handmade clothing.

You don't just make a garment.

You make that garment.

The one that exists because of all the individual choices, corrections, hours and stitches that went into it.

Foxglove took rather longer to reach the finish line than I expected.

But she got there.
